When you think of stolen credit cards, you might think of big-ticket items like shopping sprees, cars or luxury vacations.

Brantford Police say a stolen card was used to purchase something much more mundane from a city business.

The matter was brought to the attention of police by a Henry Street company, which learned that a credit card used to order 22 thermostats – with a total value of $6,215 – had been reported stolen.

Tuesday, the thermostats were delivered to an address in Toronto, with police following and watching.

Police say nobody was there when the delivery driver showed up, but a man claiming to have ordered the thermostats showed up moments later.

The 26-year-old man was placed under arrest and taken back to Brantford, to face charges including fraud, possession of a stolen credit card and breach of probation.

During his arrest, police allegedly found credit and debit cards belonging to other people in his possession, even though he was under a court order not to possess any such cards in anybody’s name.

The thermostats were returned to the company they had been ordered from.
