One man is in custody following a high-risk takedown that involved a police officer shooting at an SUV in Kitchener’s west end.
Police spent several hours in the neighbourhood northwest of Westmount Road and Victoria Street on Thursday, starting when an officer noticed the SUV – which police believed to have been stolen.
Acting on information that the driver of the SUV may have had a gun, police attempted to stop the vehicle.
The driver allegedly refused to stop and instead drove toward police officers – at which point one officer fired his gun at the vehicle’s tires in a bid to stop it.
The white SUV was left inoperable on Westwood Drive, but police say the driver ran away from the scene.
Police eventually tracked him to a high-rise on Mooregate Crescent.
Shortly after 6 p.m., one man was escorted out of the building by police and taken into custody.
A 22-year-old Kitchener man is facing a list of charges, including dangerous driving, assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon and breach of probation.
