Already shuffling lines game-by-game because of injuries and a suspension, the Kitchener Rangers are now shuffling positions in their front office as well.

The team announced Friday that Murray Hiebert is leaving that position to become the team’s director of hockey operations.

He will be replaced by Mike McKenzie, who had been serving as the team’s assistant general manager.

According to Rangers chief operating officer Steve Bienkowski, Hiebert had been planning to retire after this season, and had to be talked into staying on for one more year in another role.

“He thought it was time to take a step back from the workload required as a general manager in our league,” Bienkowski said in a media release.

Hiebert was named the Rangers’ general manager in 2013, after more than a decade in the organization’s scouting system.

McKenzie’s time with the Rangers began in 2012, when he was hired as an assistant coach.

The Rangers are down 3-1 in their first-round playoff series against Owen Sound. Game 5 takes place Friday night in Owen Sound.
