While a few details of a major deli meat producer’s plans to open a facility in Mitchell remain unknown, the community’s residents say they’re nonetheless excited about the news.
“It’s good to get the jobs back here and get the industry going again,” said Adam Gasper, who works at a nearby auto parts store.
Sofina Foods announced this week that they plan to open a multi-million-dollar operation in the former Great Lakes Specialty Meats plant.
The company, which also owns a smaller plant in nearby Dublin, plans to use the new facility to produce fresh turkey for its operations in Brampton and London.
In a press release, the company called its investment in Mitchell the “largest single investment in the Canadian turkey industry in over 25 years.”
Details of the size of that investment, or how many jobs would be created as a result, were not provided.
Jeff Dolmage, who works down the street from the plant, says any new jobs would likely be a boon to Mitchell’s economy.
“It’s probably going to draw some people from outside the area, which is good as well,” he said.
Gasper sees things the same way.
“It might not necessarily be people from Mitchell, (but) the money goes back into the town eventually,” he said.
“It’s nothing but good news.”
Consumer meat brands processed by Sofina Foods include Janes, Mastro, Lilydale and San Danielle.
