A 25-year-old Brantford man was taken to a Hamilton hospital early Thursday morning with serious injuries, but it’s not clear at this point how he was injured.

Brantford Police say they were called shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday to the parking lot of a paint store at Charing Cross Street and St. Paul Avenue, north of the city’s downtown.

Upon arrival, officers found the man lying on the roadway, next to the curb.

“He was in and out of consciousness and was subsequently transported to Brantford General Hospital,” Const. Natalie Laing tells CTV News.

Several hours later, the man was taken to a Hamilton hospital.

There were severe injuries to the back of his head, but police aren’t sure if the man was hit by a car, assaulted, or injured in another way.

“Investigators are trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding this incident. They want to determine how he received his injuries,” says Laing.

Steven Hartnell lives across the street from where the man was found.

He says he was watching TV around the time the incident was reported when he heard a loud noise.

“I heard a ‘pop’ like an automobile accident. That’s a distinct sound. I looked out and didn’t see anything,” he says.

“About 10 minutes later, the fire trucks were here.”

The man’s condition did improve over the course of the day Thursday.

For now, police say they’re treating it as a criminal case.
