Bruce Power says Cobalt-60 harvested from four of its reactors is to be used as a possible way of stopping the spread of the deadly Zika Virus.

It says Cobalt-60 -- processed by Ottawa-based Nordion -- is the key component of the Sterile Insect Technique or SIT, a process aimed at eliminating or suppressing insects that spread disease or damage crops.

The International Atomic Energy Association has announced it will be deploying the SIT process using gamma radiation from Cobalt-60 to combat the spread of Zika and West Nile viruses, as well as dengue.

Bruce Power says on its website that SIT was pioneered in the 1950's and poses no risk to the environment or to public health.
