Compensation for Guelph’s elected officials is once again up for debate.  This week, the city will ask for citizens to help set the salaries for the next four years.

CTV News asked a number of residents, the answers ranged from $20,000 to $60,000.

The answer: Guelph’s full-time mayor makes nearly $89,000, while Guelph’s part-time councillors make just under $30,000.

That yearly amount could change.  It will be up to five taxpayers to decide how much the next council will make.

“Having a citizen’s committee struck that is fully removed from the politician side is a good idea.” Guelph Councillor Cam Guthrie says.

Guthrie feels a better system would be a pay scale based on something tangible like attendance.

“There are some that attend everything and there are some that don’t.  And I believe there are some that have attendance problems.”  Guthrie explains.

It should be noted that upwards of one-third of municipal councillor’s salary is tax-free.

Those interested in setting the salaries have until the end of the month to apply.
