Residents of a Kitchener neighbourhood rocked by a home explosion will be attending a community meeting Wednesday night.
On Jan. 27, a house at the corner of Activa Avenue and Isaiah Drive exploded, causing a fireball that lit up the night sky.
A family of four was home at the time. All four were taken to hospital – three released quickly while the family’s father, Minh Nguyen, underwent surgery in Hamilton for a broken pelvis.
One month after the explosion, the Kitchener Fire Department is holding a public meeting for to update neighbours on the investigation into the blast.
“We want to bring some calm and normalcy back to the neighbourhood,” Kitchener fire chief Tim Beckett tells CTV.
What caused the house to explode remains unknown.
“We are closer in determining what the cause was,” says Beckett.
“We don’t have a cause as of yet, but we’ve been able to rule out a number of things.”
Neighbours have speculated the explosion was gas-related, and investigators have been seen closely examining a gas pipe.
Beckett says a number of appliances have been recovered from the home and sent to a forensic lab for analysis.
“It could be months before they complete their investigation,” he says.
Officials have said that they don’t believe there is any danger of surrounding houses exploding in a similar manner.
