The investigation into the cause of a fatal fire in Guelph continues as residents left homeless returned to get what little is left of their belongings.

Police in Guelph continue to guard the scene on Paisley Street after a fire on Sunday morning that claimed the life of one resident. About a dozen other people got out safely.

The man, who lived in an upstairs apartment, was pronounced dead in hospital.

There are reports there was a lot of thick, black smoke in the victim's apartment when fire crews arrived and the door had to be smashed open.

Investigators say the fire is not considered suspicious and they are looking at possibilities like careless smoking, but a cause has not yet been found.

Kim Hodgson of Guelph Fire Prevention says "Right now, the investigation is still ongoing and we haven't actually been in the unit to determine or eliminate possible causes."

Meanwhile residents returning Monday described their experience.

Tenant Peter Dura says he heard the fire department knocking and then he was simply told to "Go, go, go."

Larry 'Popeye' Dobbs, who lived at the rooming house for 16 years, also returned to pick up some things on Monday.

"I'm staying at my sister's for now…at my sister's place, just up the street here," he says.

The Red Cross and a nearby shelter are helping about a dozen people who were displaced by the fire find shelter.
