GODERICH, Ont. - Officials in Goderich say a tornado relief fund has raised more than $3.7 million, exceeding their goal of $3.5 million.
Tom Jasper, chairman of the Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Fund, says with provincial funding the contributions could generate over $10 million.
Jasper says that could pay up to 90 per cent of eligible claims from the tornado that struck the southwestern Ontario community last August 21, killing one person.
However, officials say they have not heard from the province about the amount of their funding commitment to the program.
Donations came from nine of the 10 provinces, as well as the United States.
While December 1 was the official close to the fundraising drive, Jasper says they are still accepting donations. As of the November 25 deadline to apply for assistance, 372 applications were received.
