One of Waterloo Region’s most prominent emergency shelter programs will have a significantly different look next winter.
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church has announced that it will not take part in the seasonal program when it resumes later this year.
It’s the fourth church to end its association with Out of the Cold this summer.
Unlike the other three, which took turns providing shelter services on certain nights of the week, St. Andrew’s was used as an overflow shelter on nights when extra beds are needed.
Out of the Cold isn’t the only emergency shelter program in the region.
The Region of Waterloo funds six emergency shelters, most of which are targeted to specific genders or age groups.
Van Vilaysinh, the region’s manager of social planning, says officials are assessing the impact changes to the Out of the Cold rotation will have on their services.
