Some Cambridge residents are teeing off on a development they fear may spell doom for a major piece of greenspace.

The Saginaw Golf Club has been sold to a Toronto-area developer.

The new owners have yet to announce their plans for the site, but people living nearby say they fear it will be turned into a new residential subdivision.

“My understanding is (that) they plan to put 300 houses in each nine-hole course, which will only increase the traffic,” Jeremy Joseph told CTV News.

Joseph says he understands the golf course may not be able to continue, but in that case would rather see the land turned into greenspace.

“A lot of us move into these types of subdivisions to appreciate nature,” he said.

“To see that be taken away from us should be alarming to the community.”

In 1993, Jose Lima bought a lot backing onto the cornfield that would later become the Saginaw Golf Club.

He says he paid a $20,000 premium for the site, and doesn’t want his backyard view of a golf course replaced by homes.

“I don’t want to jump to conclusions. I want to see what’s coming … then I’ll make a decision,” he said.

“If the houses come … we may move.”

The property is currently zoned for use as a park or golf course.

City officials say they’ve yet to receive any application to change that zoning or develop on the site.

Thursday, workers were seen digging holes at the golf course and putting up flags.
