With the provincial election in the books, focus is now returning to municipal races – and in Kitchener, a well-known restaurateur has filed to run for mayor.

Peter Martin, the former owner of a downtown Kitchener restaurant, officially registered to run on Thursday.

Speaking to CTV News outside Kitchener City Hall, Martin said he considered economic development one of top issues the city should address.

“The world’s changing at a much faster pace. We need to double our efforts,” he said.

Martin also said he’d like to improve the city’s arts and culture scene and work with businesses to minimize disruption to them during construction of major infrastructure projects like light rail transit.

“I know it’s a regional affair, but how it affects merchants … is important,” he said.

Also registered to run in the Oct. 27 municipal election are two current city councillors, Dan Glenn-Graham and Berry Vrbanovic.
