Damage is estimated at $15,000 following a fire in a student apartment building in Waterloo.

The fire broke out just before 7 p.m. at the Phillip Street residence.

According to Waterloo Fire, nobody was home at the time, meaning the fire burned for some time before it was reported.

Due to the damage, the two students living in the unit were not able to spend Saturday night at home.

Officials say the fire began when books stacked on a mini-fridge overheated and caught fire.
