TORONTO - An elderly patient died as a result of the C. difficile outbreak at Guelph General Hospital over the weekend.
The death brings the total number in the province to 21 since the start of the outbreak in late May. It is the second linked to the illness at the Guelph hospital.
In addition, Guelph General Hospital is reporting two new hospital-acquired cases were found over the weekend.
Increased infection control efforts remain in effect at the hospital, including enhanced cleaning and hand wipes for patients.
Seven hospitals in Ontario are continuing to experience a C. difficile outbreak, down from 10 last week.
Ontario's acting chief medical officer, Dr. David Williams, says it could be weeks before outbreaks at the remaining hospitals are considered over. Work continues to determine if they are all related.
