By the time all was said and done, the annual Canstruction event raised enough money for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region to provide 114,000 meals.

The campaign wrapped up Sunday afternoon, with its structures – which were made entirely of donated, non-perishable food items – dismantled after spending March Break in Conestoga Mall.

“It was great awareness, and everyone had a great time,” said Bailey Armitage, the food bank’s co-ordinator of community events.

Along with the removal of the sculptures, Sunday saw event organizers hand out the people’s choice award, which was voted on all week long.

The winner was the Muslim Association of Canada, for its replica of Jerusalem’s Dome of the Rock.

“We see the trouble that’s around us,” Ahmed Luzon, of the Muslim Association of Canada, told CTV News.

“This was our chance … to collect all of these food cans and donate them for the community.”

This was the eighth year of the Canstruction campaign.
