The Ontario Liberals say upgrades for Cambridge Memorial Hospital could be on the way, but that may be only if the votes go their way this fall.
The hospital is on the list of those slated for improvements, but details of how much money will go to the project have not yet been released.
Pauline Mercier lives at a seniors' residence just steps from Cambridge Memorial Hospital and says the facility could use the upgrades.
"Well, we've been promised all this money to do these renovations and expansions and it's not happening."
Her concern is shared by the city. Mayor Doug Craig says he's been pushing the province for nearly a decade for a major reconstruction of the hospital.
"We've been in discussions with four health ministers over that time period, I personally have done that. We've had the health minister down to Cambridge to talk to the community and we're sitting here still with no hospital."
Craig says residents have had enough and they're frustrated because they've seen hospital reconstruction completed in other parts of the region while Cambridge remains 10 years behind.
The Liberal government is expected to announce $5-billion in funding for new and existing hospitals this week including Cambridge Memorial, only if they're re-elected.
But Cambridge-North Dumfries Progressive Conservative MPP Gerry Martiniuk says voters have heard enough talk about the project.
"I think it's a disgrace to use hospitals and people's health for election purposes…They've all been here with all these announcements, and we never got a shovel in the ground."
Kitchener Centre Liberal MPP John Milloy says "This isn't a campaign promise, this is a government announcement of a new round of hospital infrastructure funding."
He says the delay in Cambridge is part of the government's ongoing plans.
"This is the approach we've taken. It's over a long time frame because it allows us to work with the hospitals, allows them to undertake the type of planning and detailed technical work they need so that they can proceed."
Details on how many hospitals will be renovated are expected to be released when the Ontario Liberals release their election platform.
