A Cambridge-based company is taking another big step into the nuclear arena.

BWXT Canada announced Monday that it has purchased GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada, and renamed the company BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada.

“We are joining a world-class nuclear technology company that has a clear vision and growth strategy that will bring value to our employees and our customers,” BWXT NEC president Mark Ward said in a news release.

The purchase price was not disclosed. In a press release, BWXT Canada president John Macquarrie said the company hoped to create “a smooth integration process.”

The two companies together employ about 850 people between Cambridge, Peterborough, Toronto and Arnprior.

The newly-renamed BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada produces nuclear fuel and equipment for Candu nuclear reactors.

Earlier this year, BWXT Canada announced a $130-million deal to design and build eight generators for Bruce Power.
