Of the 90 names announced Monday as new appointees to the Order of Canada, five have connections to Waterloo Region, Guelph or Stratford.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston announced the new appointments Monday.

All 90 recipients will be officially inducted at a ceremony at Rideau Hall in 2014.

Among them is Colm Feore, an actor who has appeared on television, on stage and in film.

Although he’s a Windsor native, Feore now makes his home in Stratford, where he will perform in two shows during the 2014 Stratford Festival.

Feore had previously been appointed a member of the Order of Canada. Monday’s announcement means he becomes an officer of the order.

The other four local recipients are all first-time order appointees, all named members of the order.

They are:

  • Doug Letson, a former president of St. Jerome’s University, awarded the honour for his contributions to health care and education
  • Stephen Carpenter, a Conestogo resident who helped develop Canada’s green building industry
  • Philip Gosling of Guelph, for his work founding and conserving the Bruce Trail
  • Mary Hofstetter, who spent 12 years at the helm of the Banff (Alta.) Centre, previously ran the Stratford Festival and now lives in Stratford
