A former Wellesley resident accused of killing his wife and stepdaughter plans to plead not guilty to two counts of murder and two counts of indignity to a body, according to his lawyer.
“He enjoys the presumption of innocence. He will be pleading not guilty when that time comes,” Christopher Hicks said Tuesday.
Glenn Bauman is facing charges in connection with the deaths of Linda Daniel and her teenage daughter Cheyenne.
At one point, all three lived in the same house on Hessen Strasse near St. Clements.
Bauman moved out of the home a few months after July 2011, the last time the Daniels were seen alive.
They were reported missing in December 2015.
Bauman was arrested last month in northwestern Alberta and returned to Ontario. He is now in custody at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, with his next court appearance scheduled for Sept. 16.
“It’s a sobering experience, to be arrested in Alberta and brought back to Ontario, but he’s fine,” Hicks told CTV Kitchener.
Friends have described Bauman as a quiet and peaceful man, saying they never knew him to be violent.
Hicks said he had yet to receive copies of the evidence against his client. Police have said that the Daniels’ remains have not been found.
On Tuesday, two forensic anthropologists from the Centre of Forensic Sciences arrived at the Hessen Strasse property and were seen digging holes as they searched the property.
“They’re setting up their tents and conducting a search for evidence by conducting a dig,” Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Michael Haffner told reporters.
Haffner said that police have received a number of tips from the public since Bauman’s arrest, but are still hoping to hear more information that could aid investigators.
