The cost of a proposed sportsplex in Cambridge has jumped from $53 million to $80 million, but that still doesn’t represent a final price tag.

City councillors voted Tuesday night to get cost estimates for various possible sizes and scenarios for the facility.

Among the specific questions yet to be answered are whether the multiplex will have two or four ice pads, a 25-metre or 50-metre pool, and two or three gyms.

“All these things can change,” said Mayor Doug Craig.

Once the cost estimates are in, the issue will go back to council for decisions about what to include in the project.

Craig said he hopes the budget for the facility will come in closer to $70 million, which could be further offset by grants from the provincial and federal governments.

Members of the city’s sports community have pushed for the complex to include more ice rinks and a larger pool than was initially planned.

The sportsplex will be built on land owned by Conestoga College south of Highway 401.
