There’s no clearer sign of seasons melding together than piles of snow covering up piles of leaves.

The sudden arrival of winter weather has had snow plows running regularly – and pushed back some other business that puts municipal workers on residential streets.

The Region of Waterloo says trucks were out on the roads Thursday to pick up garbage, recycling and yard waste, but were in many cases delayed due to snow.

Any homes that don’t receive pickup by 7 p.m. on their normal day should have their waste back out by 7 a.m. the following day, the region says.

All garbage and recycling routes are expected to be done by the end of Friday, but yard waste pickup will likely stretch into Saturday.

Weather permitting, leaf collection is expected to take place this weekend in Waterloo.

Kitchener has postponed its last round of leaf collection to next Monday and Tuesday.

In Waterloo, plows were out early Thursday morning, dealing with drifting snow across the city, as well as accumulation – with the city’s northwest hit hardest.

“We’re concentrating on regional roads today, and bus routes. We’ll be getting to the side streets, hopefully, later on today,” city spokesperson Meghan Harris said Thursday afternoon.

Plows first took to Waterloo’s roads last Friday – three days later than their first trips of 2013, Harris said.
