The first ION light rail transit train arrived in Waterloo Region, Saturday, months after its initial deadline.

Hundreds of residents lined up to get a tour of the train car.

“It's cool. It's nice to have new stuff in town like that,” said Suresh Ventakatachlam, who came out to see the train.

The train was supposed to arrive in the region four months ago, in December.

"The next one is going to arrive in early summer so in the June timeframe,” said Benoit Brossoit, the president of Bombardier Transportation.

Bombardier said the remaining 13 will arrive by the end of the year.

"Our original hope had been to open in the fall of this year but with the delay of the vehicles it means it will be the spring of next year but we can live with that as long as we are up and running by next year and we fully expect that that will be the case,” said Ken Seiling, the chair of the regional council.

Residents said the delay has caused a bit of a rough patch, but are happy the project is finally rolling along.

"The trains are coming whether we wanted them or not, everybody's got to get on board,” said Kerilyn Fischer, a Waterloo Region resident.
