Grand River Hospital says it expects enough surgical unit staff to be healthy by Tuesday to resume a normal surgery schedule.

The hospital had cancelled 22 surgeries since Wednesday as nurses and support staff were sent home to recover from an outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness.

A total of 24 nurses and support staff from the surgical unit have been hit by the outbreak.

“Some staff are ready to come back to work on Tuesday while some will still be recovering at home,” said Robinne Hauck, the hospital’s surgical director, in a press release.

“We’re continuing to review our situation and are maintaining rigorous infection control precautions.”

The hospital says it’s still advising people with friends and family staying on its fifth floor to avoid visiting, especially if they are feeling sick.
