City council in Kitchener has ordered a recount in a riding where victory was determined by a single vote.

Candidate Debbie Chapman had requested the recount to get a clear answer after her competitor Frank Etherington won by one ballot.

Chapman says "One vote is not enough to sort of walk away from. I think there's a need to ensure there were no ballots that for some reason should have been rejected that weren't."

Etherington has agreed with the recount from the outset, and now the city clerk will run the ballots from ward nine through the machine again.

The recount will take place at city hall Oct. 6, but if there's still a tie after the recount, the winning name could be decided by pulling it out of a hat.

John Gazzola, a Kitchener city councillor says in that case he would support a by-election, because "coming down to just rolling the dice is just ridiculous."

Other councillors like Berry Vrbanovic say any election decided by fewer than 25 votes should be reviewed by a judge automatically.

Etherington, for his part, believes the situation could have been avoided, "if there had been more polls in the ward. There were so few polls, there were a number of people that had difficulty getting out to them."
