Some residents have been displaced after a fire in a downtown Guelph building.

Firefighters were called to the Sip Club restaurant at 91 Wyndham Street around 4:40 Saturday afternoon.

They found smoke in the building, but no obvious fire.

“They started to do an aggressive interior breeching of walls and floors and ceilings. They did find some flames inside the walls,” John Osborne, deputy fire chief with the Guelph Fire Department told CTV News.

It took a few hours to put out the flames.

The intersection of Wyndham and Douglas Streets was closed while firefighters responded. Some nearby businesses closed for the evening.

Most residents of the apartments above the restaurant weren’t home at the time of the fire. No one was hurt, including pets that were retrieved from some apartments.

Victim services and the Red Cross are helping residents displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated. There is no damage estimate at this time.
