While stories of tragedy continue to pour out of Nepal as relief workers make their way into parts of the country devastated by Saturday’s earthquake, three Waterloo Region families have received good news about their loved ones.

Two 25-year-old men from Kitchener, Matthew Hummel and Ryan Laverdiere, have been found safe.

Family members tell CTV News they were together when the quake hit, and were able to escape the building they were in before it collapsed.

Their next destination was to be the Mount Everest base camp – where an avalanche caused by the earthquake left at least 18 people dead.

A third person with ties to Kitchener, Emily Uffelman, has reportedly been found safe as well.

Two former Kitchener residents, Leah and Luke Reesor-Keller, were in Nepal on behalf of the Mennonite Central Committee when the earthquake struck.

The couple, who have been in Nepal since 2012, have since made contact with MCC.
