Some of the best clay shooters from around the world were in Puslinch Township this weekend competing in the World English Sporting Championships.

It is the first time the competition has ever been held in Canada. It has attracted more than 300 of the highest Caliber shooters in the sport.

Members of the Galt shooting club, it’s a pretty big honour to be hosting this event

Organizer Robert Meisner said, “The last time we had a competition like this it was 1976 at the Olympics in Montreal. Never again since then has there been has there been a world championship here in Canada.”

George Digweed is a 21 time world shooting champion. He’s been in the sport for about 30 years. For many he’s considered the Tiger Woods shooting world. He competes in almost 20 international competitions a year.

“You’ve got to have good hand eye coordination and you've also not got to worry about what's going on” said Digweed.

Stefan Sansalone started clay shooting like many in the sport do as a way to practice during the hunting off season.  He’s traveled from Mississauga to compete in the lower rankings and says seeing idols like Digweed is a huge thrill.

“It was unbelievable because up till now I’d only seen them in magazines so to see them up close it was really nice”

Competitors will be shooting up to 500 clay targets over the course of the competition and all of them will be traveling at various levels of difficulty.

The six day competition wrapped up today.
