One woman died in hospital after firefighters pulled her out of a burning building in Dunnville, southeast of Cayuga.

Haldimand County OPP say one of their officers noticed smoke coming from a home on Pine Street around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The officer went to investigate, and found an injured man outside the home. The man said that there were other people inside.

Two people got to safety on their own, while a third was rescued by emergency crews and was pronounced dead in hospital.

She has been identified as Paula Coupe, a 52-year-old Dunnville resident.

The man initially found outside the home was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries that were said not to be life-threatening.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire, and say early signs point to careless smoking as a possible cause.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.
