The provincial government is doubling a four-kilometre stretch of Canada's busiest highway west of Toronto.

Premier Kathleen Wynne says the expansion of Highway 401 in Mississauga to 12 lanes from the current six will cost $81 million and support 800 construction jobs.

She says the project -- expected to be complete by 2019 -- will span Hurontario Street to the Credit River and will include two high-occupancy lanes.

The expansion is one of 230 highway construction projects that are expected to begin this year.
