A Guelph man is facing charges after a police dog followed his trail for nearly two kilometres through a neighbourhood in that city.

Police say officers responded to Vanier Drive shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday after being told that a man was seen going into cars parked in the area.

Although the man was gone by the time police arrived, a police dog was able to track his path through a school yard, multiple backyard and a municipal park.

Eventually, the man was found on Bellevue Street and placed under arrest.

The police dog also tracked down a backpack containing several stolen items, which the man had allegedly tried to hide in a backyard.

The 21-year-old man is charged with trespassing, possession of stolen property and breach of probation.
