Guelph police began project Safe Semester Friday night. The project closes down McDonnall and Wyndam streets to cars on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Cars parked on McDonnall and Wyndam during the hours the project runs will be ticketed, or towed.

Police say the closure makes things generally safer for the public.

“We have a more organized flow of pedestrian traffic. People are getting out of the downtown quicker, there are fewer injuries, fewer fights, fewer disturbances. There is more room for people to move around… previously it’s been very successful,” said Inspector Garry Male with Guelph Police.

The city has also set up a portable washroom at Guelph central station, and the Student Association at Guelph University is funding extended bus service, that will run until 3:30 a.m.

The project will run until the end of September.
