An outbreak of the C. difficile bacteria has ended, Guelph General Hospital officials say.

The outbreak was declared in November after four patients contracted the bacteria.

Two more patients were found to have C. difficile a week later, and one of the six died – although it was not known if the death and infection were linked.

Monday morning, the hospital and Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health declared the outbreak to be over.

A bacteria which can cause diarrhea and other symptoms, C. difficile is one of the more common infections in hospitals.

Elderly people and those taking antibiotics are among the most likely to contract it.
