Fire broke out around 4 a.m. Monday in a Cambridge home, sending a family of three out of their house in a hurry.

The fire is believed to have begun in an upstairs bedroom at the home on Darren Crescent, near Cooper Street and the Jamieson Parkway.

Firefighters responded and extinguished the flames before they could spread past the bedroom.

Smoke and water damage permeated the home, with an early damage estimate set at slightly less than $100,000.

Neighbour Bruce Lindsay woke up to the sound of arriving sirens.

He says firefighters and police are an uncommon presence in the area.

“I’m just so happy everyone’s OK. You don’t want that kind of tragedy in your neighbourhood,” he tells CTV News.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, while the family is now staying with relatives.
