The Elmira Sugar Kings picked up a big win Sunday afternoon, advancing to the Sutherland Cup final while defeating the team that claimed the GOJHL’s last three championships.

Elmira overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat the Caledonia Corvairs 3-2 and take the semifinal series in six games.

Caledonia held a 1-0 lead after the first period, and added to it when Quentin Maksimovich scored in the first minute of the second period.

The Sugar Kings stormed back later in the second, scoring three goals in less than seven minutes – including the power-play marker from Ethan Skinner that would hold up as the game’s winning goal.

Jonathan Reinhart made 42 saves for Elmira in the win.

With the victory, Elmira moves on to the Sutherland Cup final. Their opponents will be the London Nationals, who eliminated Listowel in five games in the other semifinal.

The Nationals last reached the final in 2016, losing to Caledonia. They won it in 2013, making them the last team to win the Sutherland Cup prior to Caledonia’s three-peat.

Elmira’s last Sutherland Cup appearance came in 2011, when they defeated Niagara Falls to win the championship.

The schedule for the final has not been released.
