A 26-year-old man from the Drayton area is recovering from stab wounds after he was attacked in Ottawa on Friday.

He was part of a Mennonite church group that was singing in the Byward Market area.

“We had a confrontation with a young lady, who wasn't happy with the message that we were singing here, and got violent a number of times with different ones of our youth, and then the last time through actually… changed dresses and slipped through and stabbed one of our fellows in the back,” explained group member Eric Brubacher.

Police in Ottawa did not release the victim's name, but say he suffered non-life threatening injuries and has been released from hospital.

Brubachersaid the woman was unhappy with the church's acceptance of homosexuality.

"The confrontation was about the idea of homosexuality... if that's ok, if that's acceptable and whether God loves somebody who is in that state, and we assured her that he does,"Brubacher said.

He  added the church group extends forgiveness to the woman.

Police say she has not been located.

The group was on a three day trip to Ottawa. Friday was their first day performing.
