As a contractor, Marcus Drasdo is used to taking on big projects.

Now he’s in charge of what may be his biggest yet – putting together Kitchener’s Terry Fox Run from the ground up in less than six months.

Earlier this week, the Terry Fox Foundation announced that seven communities in Ontario were without organizers for this fall’s events.

Drasdo saw that announcement, and decided to take on the responsibility himself.

“Terry Fox pretty much embodies the Canadian spirit at its greatest,” he says.

“I thought ‘You know what, I can’t believe that Kitchener is in jeopardy of losing the run.’”

The job comes with a budget of $0 and an organizing committee comprised of no one. Drasdo says he’s started reaching out to potential volunteers, and hopes more come forward.

“We’re going to need lots of people and lots of help to make this a successful run,” he says.

While planning for this year’s run is still in the very preliminary stages, Drasdo says he’s thinking of moving it from Sportsworld Crossing to a more central location. Victoria Park is one possibility.

The Terry Fox Run events in Drayton and Listowel are also looking for organizers.
