A new year is bringing with it a new set of road closures as construction of the Ion light rail transit system continues.

Perhaps the most impactful new closure will be on Courtland Avenue, which will close to vehicles for six months starting Jan. 18.

The closure affects the portion of Courtland between Block Line Road and Manitou Drive.

The suggested detour for drivers is along Block Line, Homer Watson Boulevard, Bleams Road and Manitou.

While through traffic will be banned, businesses and residences along that stretch of Courtland will remain accessible.

Other road closures due to Ion-related construction that will be in effect as of Jan. 18 include:

  • Hayward Avenue will close at the railway tracks for 10 months
  • The intersection of King and Union streets, for approximately six weeks
  • The intersection of Charles and Gaukel streets in Kitchener, for all traffic except southeast traffic, for approximately six weeks
  • The Waterloo intersection of King and Allen streets will close for about three weeks

Long-term closures continue on Northfield Drive, including the off-ramps from Highway 85 (an 18-month closure), the northbound on-ramp to the highway (expected to reopen on Feb. 1), and the intersection of Northfield and Kumpf drives (expected to last until June).

King Street also remains closed in north Kitchener, between Victoria Street and Moore Avenue.
