The boy who died following a helicopter crash in Hawaii was a high school student in Guelph, and a well-known person in Ontario’s show jumping community.

Riley Dobson, 16, was aboard the helicopter last Thursday with his brother and parents, when it crashed near the Pearl Harbor Visitors Center.

Witnesses said he was trapped underwater by the crash, and had to be cut free from his seat.

His parents remain in hospital in Hawaii, listed as being in stable condition.

Dobson’s brother was also taken to hospital, but released from care the same day the crash occurred.

Dobson attended Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph.

Outside of school, he was known in Ontario’s show jumping community for being one of its few male riders.

Officials with the Upper Grand District School Board say supports are available for staff members and students affected by the teen’s death, including the presence of guidance counsellors and social workers.

Flags flew at half-mast outside Centennial on Tuesday in his memory.
