Homicide detectives are investigating after a mother and daughter were found dead in a Kitchener townhouse Monday evening.

Joanna Nowakowska, 38, and her daughter, four-year-old Bianca Nowakowska, were found in a home on Mooregate Crescent.

A relative discovered the victims inside the home and called 911 shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

Police say the two were pronounced dead in the townhouse and the deaths are being treated as suspicious.

However Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Kevin Thaler says "At this point, we are not looking for any suspects and we do not have any concerns for public safety."

The bodies were removed from the scene early Tuesday morning and a post mortem examination was being conducted in Hamilton.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide Branch at 519-650-8500 ext. 8666 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Community shocked by deaths

The family is being described as private and not very well-known in the neighbourhood, but area residents are still shaken by what happened.

Kara Dickson lives nearby and says "It's usually pretty quiet, it's a shock to hear about what happened this morning."

CTV News has learned that Joanna also had a teenage daughter, who is now staying with her grandparents. The family is asking for privacy at this time.

Meanwhile, Bianca is being remembered as a popular student in her junior kindergarten class at Canadian Martyr Catholic Elementary School in Kitchener.

Police and grief counsellors were on hand at the school to help students deal with the trauma.

John Shewchuk, public affairs manager for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, says "Bianca was a very well-liked young person, very spritely, smiley, always giving hugs, full of energy, just everything you would expect from a kindergarten student."
