Region of Waterloo International Airport has announced another sunny destination for prospective passengers.

Starting Dec. 10, WestJet will offer weekly flights between the airport and Orlando.

The flights will take place every Thursday until April 28, 2016, with planes leaving Waterloo Region at 9:45 a.m. and returning at 4:42 p.m.

In an interview, airport general manager Chris Wood called the announcement “fantastic news for the airport,” which WestJet already services via flights to and from Calgary.

“We get asked all the time about service to Florida, so this seemed like a natural fit,” he said.

Airport officials say they hope to reduce passenger fees for American destinations by 25 per cent, bringing them in line with fees for domestic flights.

Earlier this year, Sunwing Vacations announced new seasonal flights between Waterloo Region and Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba.

Those flights, also offered weekly, begin Dec. 24.

Wood said he continues to talk to airlines about restoring service to Ottawa or adding other destinations in Canada, and is “making progress” on that front.
