A police officer with the Waterloo Region force pleaded guilty to drug charges in a Kitchener court on Monday.

Const. Andrew Robson was charged with theft and drug possession after a sting set up by undercover officers in November 2010.

On Monday Robson admitted to taking marijuana from a bag that was seized before he signed it in as evidence.

A sting was set up to test his “integrity” after allegations that Robson was potentially involved in the possession and use of marijuana.

Federal prosecutor Anik Jojouin says “They took an undercover officer who posed as a mother and during his shift turned over some marijuana to see what Const. Robson would do with that marijuana.”

Robson took the woman’s information and a statement and possession of the marijuana, but before turning it in, took roughly half of the drugs from the bags.

After his shift, Robson was arrested and 60.65 grams, about two ounces of marijuana, was found during a search of his vehicle.

Despite the guilty plea, a conviction wasn’t registered. Robson claims he was entrapped and wants the charges stayed.

Jojouin says “An entrapment hearing is when somebody has committed a crime and they’re found guilty of doing it, but they bring an application saying there was an abuse of process, the state acting in such a way that they shouldn’t be convicted for the offense.”

If Robson loses at the entrapment hearing, the Crown says it will ask for jail time.
