Police say they’ve found the truck used to rip two ATMs from their homes inside The Aud early Wednesday morning, but have yet to figure out who was behind the caper.
Around 4 a.m., Waterloo Regional Police say, a pickup truck that had been stolen from a garage in St. Jacobs smashed through the Stirling Avenue entrance to the Kitchener arena.
The truck was then used to grab the ATMs, which had been bolted to the floor.
Police say they later caught up with the truck on Otterbein Road, in Kitchener’s east end.
“There was significant damage to the vehicle – and in the back were the two empty ATMs,” Waterloo Regional Police Staff Sgt. Mike Haffner told CTV News.
By mid-morning, damage to the building – mainly related to the broken doors on the Stirling side – had been cleaned up.
Arena general manager Paul Pickard said that it was “business as usual” inside, and that while new doors might not be in place in time for Friday night’s Kitchener Rangers game, the Stirling entrance would remain usable.
“The good news is (that) nobody was in the building and nobody was hurt that we’re aware of,” he said.
Last week, a similar theft occurred at The Manor, a Guelph strip club occasionally used as a church.
One ATM was stolen in that heist, but later dropped at the roadside during a police chase and recovered by police.
