The Waterloo Regional Police Service named Stephen Beckett as acting chief Wednesday.
Beckett has been with the WRPS for over 34 years. In that time he has held a variety of roles in the WRPS. He is currently serving as the deputy chief of police, systems and innovation.
Beckett will take over for retiring Chief Matt Torigian on June 8.
When asked why he wanted to be the acting chief, and not hold the position permanently Beckett replied that 34 years into his career, the board needs a long term chief.
“For me personally, I’m very happy to act as the chief of police to forward the strategy that’s already set by the board, and set the table for the next chief coming forward. To be able to support that person in their new role, and of course continue with chief Torigian’s legacy in the interim,” he said.
Beckett will hold the position until a permanent chief is appointed later this year. Applications for the position closed last month.
