Some of Ontario’s early childhood educators could soon see bigger paycheques.
Education Minister Liz Sandals announced Friday that eligible ECEs at licenced childcare facilities would be able to apply for a $1-per-hour raise – just as they were in 2015.
Home daycare providers, meanwhile, can apply for a second straight year for a raise of up to $10 per day.
“Following on last year’s success, our government is taking action to increase wages in licenced childcare settings for a second straight year,” Sandals said.
Sandals said that the program saw a “very high” uptake in 2015, with 94 per cent of licenced daycare facilities applying for the raises, along with 91 per cent of home daycare providers.
She said the goal behind the pay increases is to close the wage gap between ECEs working in daycares and those working in kindergarten classrooms.
ECEs already earning more than $26 per hour will not be eligible for the raises.
