Nearly two months after GO Transit launched commuter train service to Waterloo Region, officials say the number of riders using the service is meeting expectations.
The data come from Metrolinx, the government agency in charge of GO Transit service in and around the GTA.
Based on ridership from Dec. 19, 2011, the day the service launched, to Jan. 27, 2012, they found thousands of people are using the GO train.
On average, 150 people take the new weekday round-trip train service into Toronto.
In an email Drew Davidson, media relations specialist at Metrolinx, says it will take some time to build ridership.
"We anticipate our new rail and bus services will grow over several years to reach their full ridership potential. As we move forward with the extended rail service between Kitchener and Toronto, we expect this growth trend to be the case with this new service as well."
GO Transit has also added 21 bus trips to and from Waterloo Region in response to growth on those routes especially on Fridays and weekends.
