Haldimand OPP officers are crediting a “quick thinking” pilot for safely landing a World War II single-engine plane near Highway 3, in Cayuga.

Police say the 64-year-old pilot left the Hamilton Airport in a yellow and black 1942 Westland Lysander from Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

OPP say a bystander saw the vintage plane land in a field after the experiencing engine trouble.

The crash landing caused some serious damage to the aircraft, but remarkably the pilot and his 61-year-old female passenger were not hurt.

The National Transport Safety Board has been contacted.

In a media release police credit and praise the pilots flying experience, “Due to the quick thinking actions of this experienced pilot, he was able to safely land the aircraft in a field without causing any serious injuries to himself or his passenger,” said Const. Ed Sanchuk.
