A crash between a car and a passenger train has left two people dead.

The crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. Monday near the community of Melbourne, south of Strathroy and southwest of London.

According to Middlesex County OPP, the two victims were the only people in the car, which drove into the path of the Via Rail train at a rail crossing.

There were 88 people aboard the eastbound train, one of whom reported a minor injury but declined an ambulance.

“Everybody on board is fine,” said OPP Sgt. Dave Rektor.

The train was delayed for about four hours before resuming its journey to Toronto.

Two other trains on the same line were delayed by about 90 minutes, while passengers boarding east of Melbourne were provided with alternate transportation to Toronto.

Weather is not believed to be a factor in the collision, as the roads were dry and clear at the time, Rektor said.

In 2014, one woman died when her car was hit by a train at the same crossing.

The crossing is controlled by flashing lights. It does not have an arm barricade.
