Thursday morning, four people dealing with the aftermath of a car crash in Stratford were hit by an oncoming vehicle.

It all happened just after 7 a.m., at Wright Boulevard and Lorne Avenue.

Kai Groen, one of the drivers in the initial crash, was standing behind his vehicle, being assessed by paramedics, when the other vehicle approached from the driveway.

“We were standing there … making sure everybody was OK, and somebody shouted out ‘Whoa!’” he told CTV News.

“Before we had a chance, the car hit the (other) gentleman’s vehicle, which swung into three of us.”

Groen, the other driver and two paramedics were flung several feet into a nearby snowbank.

Minor injuries were reported.

Cliff Eggleton, the deputy chief of Perth County EMS, says he’s glad the situation wasn’t worse – but still surprised it occurred at all.

“When there’s emergency services with their lights flashing, you’re supposed to slow down or avoid the area. Obviously this didn’t happen,” he said.

Groen said he was impressed by the dedication of the paramedics, even after they themselves were hit.

“She didn’t even think about her own injuries until we got to the hospital,” he said.

Police say charges are pending against the second driver, who allegedly didn’t have his windshield cleared – a fact which surprised Eggleton.

“That’s a basic (thing) that people should be doing every day,” he said.
