Soh Gwa Yan Di Saw Styres, charged with second-degree murder in the death of 68-year-old Six Nations resident John Lickers Sr., appeared Thursday in a Brantford court.
Styres made a brief appearance via video link before another court date was set for Aug. 29.
“We’ve put the matter over for four weeks to allow us to receive some Crown disclosure and find out just what the case is all about,” defence lawyer Gord Cudmore told CTV News.
Styres is currently being held without bail in Brantford’s jail.
Cudmore says a bail hearing could be one or two months away.
“He could be waiting quite some time,” he said.
Styres is the son of Curt Styres, who is involved in the Ohsweken Speedway, lacrosse efforts and several other major community ventures.
While aboriginal Canadians have the right to Gladue, a sentencing principle that can take other circumstances into account to keep an offender out of prison, Cudmore says it’s too soon to tell if Styres will pursue this avenue.
